Well ladies, Summer is officially over. Sad. I know. But, it just so happens that Fall is my favorite season of all, not only for clothes but for hair and makeup too. So, plan to hear me talk a lot about Fall makeup. Summer was all about bright, bold showy colors on the lips. And, while I’m always a sucker for a cool pop of color in the form of lipstick, I think I reached my limit this Summer. While, there are plenty of new lipstick colors this Fall which range from either very dark or blazing bright, it’s important to find that neutral, natural lip color that is your every day go-to color. This is the neutral lip color you can wear any time of the day, with any outfit – even as the only bit of color on your face and still look like you’re all put together. The most useful lip color is a shade that’s just a bit brighter than your natural lip color. It will intensify and draw intention to your lips the way mascara will make your eyes brighten and pop. For some people, that shade is a peachy brown or rosy pink. For others it’s a beige or eggplant color. It all depends on your skin tone.
Take Camilla Belle for example. Camilla shows us just how the neutral lipstick works for Fall in her light peach shade of lipstick a few shades darker than the color of her bare lips. This gives you the “I’m not wearing makeup effect”, but also defines the lips so they draw you in, but don’t take over your entire face with color.
To steal her look, avoid anything with shimmer or sparkle. Gently buff your lips with a damp washcloth. Nude doesn’t mean concealer colored. As mentioned above, choose a hue that is a shade or two darker than your natural lip color. Use a lip pencil to pencil to define the lips that is one shade lighter than the lipstick you’re using. Apply one coat of lipstick straight from the tube. Blot the first coat with a tissue, then add another coat. Finish with a dot of clear gloss on the middle of the lips. Nude goes with anything, but for an extra oomph to your look for night add a good amount of eyeshadow, eyeliner and lots and lots of mascara.
My picks for neutral lip colors to try:
M.A.C. Lipstick in Freckletone (as shown on Camilla Belle)
Estée Lauder Pure Color Velvet Lipstick in Nude Velvet (for golden brown skin)
Rouge Dior Lipstick in Angelique Beige (for fair skin)
Clarins Joli Rouge in Desert Rose (for darker skin)
Benefit Full Finish Lipstick in Lady’s Choice (perfect for many skin tones and won’t wash you out)
