Joe is a makeup designer, makeup artist, and fine artist working in the industry for 25 years. He is most known for his makeup designs for Broadway but has also worked in the editorial, fashion, and now film and television industry. He is an educator, not only teaching at 3 universities over the last 8 years but also has done workshops for MAC, Kryolan, The Makeup Show, and The Powder Group. In his own work, he creates characters on himself that he performs, most notably his drag character Mr. Drag. He is a writer, director, and performer. His most recent series of painting #MascFem, painting exploring the juxtaposition of masculine and feminine through portraits of drag queens and kings, manifested into his first gallery show.
What drew you to a career in makeup?
I was always fascinated by old monster movies as a kid: Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman. And every Halloween I would get dressed up and do some crazy makeup on myself. I love transforming into another character.
